Arrowhead ArtSpace

Hello Arrowhead parents, students, and teachers! This is our first post to the blog, and we have covered a lot this semeseter.

The first project we worked on was the creation of a mural featuring the students and their silhouettes. The students traced each other, then filled in the outlines with their favorite things, as well as creating a background from their favorite places.

Next, we traveled the neighborhood, looking for interesting plants and sketching them. This exercise allowed the students to see what kinds of plants are grown in their neighborhoods, as well as work on drawing and observational skills.

The next project we worked on involved taste, touch, smell, and writing. The students had to smell, feel, and even eat some plants brought in by Joe, including kumquats, trying to emphasize that art can deal with all senses. The project we have been working on for the last few weeks involves several of these lessons. The students collected and brought in flowers from home and the schoolyard, and after observation of their leaves/flowers, began writing haiku. After, they designed a final display that includes plexiglass, wood, painting, drawing, and the plants themselves.
